Hey guys thanks for the great advice so far!! O.K. I have the carrier out and all the gears and the clutch look O.K. (I am no expert but very little wear is visible).. This leads me to think the shift linkage may have misadjusted after all. My question is can you move the gear shaft on the lower unit into reverse by hand? ( I could move the shaft but I'm not sure I was engage the clutch). The spring seems very tight on the propshaft. how do you verify the lower unit shift shaft is in the right place? Sorry to ask all the questions but this is my first lower unit project. P.S. I do have a clymer's but it is a little vague. Thanks again for all the help past and present I am scared to think of the repair bill at the shop on this one.

If your Q is too specific for this board, try John's Old Merc site at this URL:
www.pfs-ware.com
Then go to John's Merc page and then to the Q&A page. Lots of good info there.

TWM

Put the control in reverse, and before installing the L/U, put the L/U in reverse by hand. If, after you have it all together, it does not nuetral and forward as it should, chances are very good, that the linage DOES need to be adjusted.

sorry but I am a little confused. I have the carrier bearing and propshaft out right now. Are you saying after I reinstall them I should be able to move the shift linkage to nuetral and reverse by hand. The linkage was very tuff to move before I took it apart. I wonder if the clutch is supposed to be that stiff????

Yes you should be able to move the shaft by hand, you will need a pair of pliars to grip the shaft but it should move by hand. The shaft works as a cam it will spin 360 degrees until it reaches the neutral position at this point it will rotate 30 degrees in either direction engaging forward or reverse depending on direction.
