Hey guys, I was told that the non repair board might be able to help me some more with my quest to improve my 9.5hp Evinrude.<br /><br />I am running this motor on a 14ft aluminum right now and want to get more power / speed if possible. I am looking at different props right now but someone else told me to try and mount the motor higher and farther back? I wanted to add that the motor is in the shop right now getting new pistons and rings so any internal mods are welcome, after all it is in pieces.<br /><br />Thanks allot in advance.<br />Chris

Yep, someone else is right. You'll find a lot more performance improvements are to be had working on setup then tinkering with the engine, if the engine is already in top shape.<br />Weight distribution and bottom shape & condition is critical. Simply moving as much weight forward as possible might make for some dramatic gains. Raising the engine up on the transom reduces drag from the gearcase (and what a gearcase!) but watch that you still get good cooling water flow in idle, full throttle and reverse.

What is the best way to go about moving this motor to the best spot? I don't have a jack plate and the motor just mounts with the std. screw clamps? What type of gains am I looking at? Your right, it is a heck of a gear case.......

Back in the old days they used to use "speed sticks", a number of sticks about 1/4" thick that were slipped in between the top of the transom and the bottom of the clamps. But you might run into a problem where you run out of transom to clamp to - then you have to get creative. Either ditch the clamps and go with bolting the engine on, or build up the transom.<br />Gains depend on how bad the set up is now. Don't expect to open up a whole lot unless your boat is really overweight or the weight is in the wrong places. But a couple MPH is certainly possible, which is nothing to sniff at. If you want more, you must follow Rip5's suggestion. <br /><br />You'll need a handheld GPS and (most important) a tachometer to keep track of your gains & losses.

smooth out the bottom of the boat,and smoth all of the moter in the water,and be able to trim the boat on the fly, stay low and look for a lite chop on the water,,watch you gas/oil mix
