more rpms?

Got the motor running sweet. Starts reliably. Life is good. She gets about 5200 at full throttle. 94 omc 115 crossflow vro2. Pulled the filler blocks on rebuild. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the extra 600 rpm that the power pack will take? The powerhead is mounted to an inboard jet pump (turbojet) I assume I lose a bit there. Anyone? Dhadley?

Re: more rpms?

Jets don't act like an outboard. About the only way I know to gain rpm is with a smaller impeller (which usually slows you down) or with a lot more hp. I'm sure they have trick grates & intakes & nozzels etc just like the big jets but I've never messed with that. To be honest I don't really know who to suggest you call.

Try http://shop.evinrude.com/. There were performance kits for the later models and changes in the jets. Select TurboJet instead of Evinrude on the picklist and see more recent years.

Re: more rpms?

I installed the performance grate and nozzle kit for my setup and noticed good improvement to handling and holeshot. Installed 68c jets in carbs as opposed to 67c's which were stock. Recommended rpm range is 45-5500 rpm. I should just beat my tinkering spirit down and leave well enough alone. I have been unable to find a way to get any more rpms. I just can't help but feel worried about carbon buildup so I seafoam every 20 hrs. Considering buying stock in the company.

Re: more rpms?

I appreciate the feedback.

FYI: I tore down the engine on my nephew's TurboJet 115 last summer and it was clean after three full seasons. We had been running on 24:1 using synthetic blend, 89 US octane, and BRP Carbon Guard. I rebuilt the engine in 2003. We used 24:1 because he was pulling skiers much of the time, and basically running the boat wide open whenever he could.

Don't ya hate it when you do more than one modification at a time and you start to question the validity of one or more of them.

On the issue of jet sizes to increase rpms. I get the reasoning, ezeke, about later models having increased size high speed jet sizes and that more gas can sometimes mean more horsepower. I wonder if perhaps omc did that, not for better performance, but to prevent the notorious overheating problems with the turbojet by richening the mix.

In my opinion overheats on this drive system are more the result of poor maintenence and or sucking debris into the cooling system by running too shallow. I intend on replacing the stock jets back in the carbs and see what happens. Perhaps, as in higher altitudes, an rpm increase can be gained by running leaner. Even if it is just a tad.

Unlike an prop there is a huge difference in propulsion in regards to rpm hence their inefficiency. Once you get into that higher rpm range the performance increases exponentially. I can't help but think that even an extra 200 rpm could, wishfull thinking, result in 6-10mph gain at wot.

Told ya my tinkering spirit won't shut up.
