1979 Mercruiser with repowered 5.7 engine.

MR drive MC 1 transom. New shift cable and just adjusted. Worked perfect on muffs. Worked great at first on the water. When trying to load in trailer, with lots of shifts between gears it felt sticky trying to get back to neutral. I had to wiggle remote to get into gear both forward and reverse. Also it stayed in gear a couple of times even when the remote was in the neutrsl detente. Any ideas where to start?

Ayuh,... Sounds like the shift switch ain't workin',... start there,...

It's only suppose to work with a load on the prop in the water,...
but it should stall the motor if manually pressed,..

Is the shift interrupt switch adjusted correctly?

BTW, the 1/8" 'special tool', I use a 1/8" drill... ;)

Re: more shift problems

thanks Bondo, thanks Chris, I'll try the switch test tomorrow. FYI, I had a bad switch once and you had to wrestle the shifter out of gear, this was much more subtle. also, when I was docking, (and in a hurry because I was up against the clock picking the wife up from work), I thought I heard the outdrive bounce when I hit reverse. I put the lower shift cable on according to the video, carefully. I had good test results with locking and equal racheting in forward and reverse. I didn't move the stud in the reverse shift slot because I didn't think I needed to, and, because I see references to the "stud should be on the bottom", but my shift plate is flat, ie. no bottom. I don't know if stud should start in slot toward front or rear of engine. also, could the reverse lock out not functioniong or not adjusted properly cause shift issues like I described?

Re: more shift problems

I found the interrupter switch to be opening late. That could account for the sticky shifts. I would guess opening too soon would result in some stalls. Cant wait to get on the water and see. I found a 1/8th special tool in my box and found also, the 7/64, 3/32, and 5/64th accessory special tools to be useful in approaching the 1/8th mark. I Must have the deluxe kit . thanks for the help on this gentlemen.

'Bottom of the slot' is closest to the pivot point of the shift lever.

That's the biggest one of those I have ever seen. I wish I could say I caught it, but it was my mate. :( All I can say is I took him to the right spot ;)
