i made a post earlier today because my starter wasn't contacting the flywheel. i lubed up the gears with WD40, cleaned all connections, and put the batt on to charge for about six hours on 2 amps. just put it back in and tried it again and now the starter will engage the flywheel, but the flywheel just kinda "pulses" or "chugs" round and round slowly. is this still a battery problem? i just got the motor put back together from a piston, rod and bearings change and boring on one cylinder. when i turn the flywheel with the nut, i can feel some back pressure, but no binding or anything. just compression as far as i can tell. by the way its a '79 rude 85. thanks again in advance.

Try a known good battery , you can jump it. If motor turns freely , smoothly, by hand . Then it something else. Make sure all connections to battery are clean and tight. Id try good battery first. One other thing , if battery was dead 6 hours on 2amp will not charge it all the way.
KYHunter

I've just hooked jumper cables to the battery just like jumping a car . Its 12 volts. This may not be a good idea, I dont know. I've done it and had no problems. If in doubt ,just put your truck battery in the boat, and try it. You might just want to chrarge your boat battery overnight, if you have only the 2 amp charger. I have an onboard charger 10 amps per bank. It takes 6-8 hours at 10 amps to charge mine if they're really down.
Good-luck,
KYHunter

Sounds like you need a good charge on the battery. It is risky to use clamp charger cables on your system, it can fry your rectifier in a second and do other damage. Sparks in a boat are never a good idea. Most manuals will tell you not to even run a charger in the boat.

If you want to be safe, take the battery to a good service station, have them check and charge it for you. Couple of bucks, maybe an hour or so.

When you reconnect it, clean the terminals and connections at both ends of your cables.

The best battery in the world does not help start a motor that has junk battery cables, bad terminal ends, and bad connections. Do the simple stuff first. Don't just look at the connections, disconnect, clean and reattach them. A battery with one or more bad cells can be charged 'til dooms day and it won't start a go kart. If all of this checking doesn't fix the problem, jump directly to the starter. If it then spins normally, there is still a battery/cable/solenoid current delivery problem.

ezeke,
Im assuming , when you said ,"Most manuals will tell you not to even run a charger in the boat." You were referring to , seperate chargers , not permanent onboard chargers.
Onboard chargers, if properly connected.
Are as likely , as turning the key switch is.
To cause a spark, or otherwise be dangerous.
KYHunter
