more stator Questions 79 merc 200hp.

iam still looking for help on stator for a 1979 200hp. mercury O/B .... I understand a stator goes out sometime or another but this one has very few hours on it, and i was just wondering if there are some things that may cause a stator to go out prematurly.I suspected the new flywheel the mechanic recently installed because it was different than the old one which is no longer available, also had to change the starter to match the flywheel, after the the flywheel was replaced the engine ran for maybe 30 min and the stator went out , trolled onto trailer once again,(been there several times ... see old posts lol) and off to the shop. All I really want to know is would a different flywheel cause the stator to go out? is there another problem causing stator to fail so soon? I wass told something about an air gap ajustment..? watts this ? any way thanx for any advice and knowlege you can give, I really love this place, Lots of peeps with problems so iam not alone lol thanx again

What was wrong with the old flywheel?

the old flywheel was missing lots of teeth, worn off, had to change the starter to match the new flywheel( new starter gear wouldnt fit on old starter mechanic told me) thanx for the reply clanton

Can ya get a hold of a dva meter? I would do out put checks and compare to merc specs. At idle and at 3000 rpm.

Should be someone on www.screamandfly.com that can tell you which flywheel and stator match. Check with www.rapair.com, for replacement stator. They also have a tech service line, and could help trouble shoot problem. There stators warranty 1 year.

thanx Salty and Clanton for the replies, We have already checked the stator , deader than 4 o'clock . ( my boat mech. did while i watched free of charge ,Out of sympathy for me since I have paid him about 1200 dollars in the last year tryin to get this running right , any way thanx a heap guys for the reply and the links too Clanton, Ill check em all . and let ya know watt i find out,( wanna see if i need to give my money to a diffrent mech. lol)
