HELP !!!

My new project boat has a Morse duel cable rotary steering system that needs new cables. I cant find any numbers on it, or on the cables :( . I realy dont want to replace the whole system because it has one cable on each side of the boat, and all the new ones I've seen have had both cables on one side (= new holes and an empty hole on the other side of the hull. new conections on the motor ). Does anybody know if any of the new cables will work with this system ? Or if someone remembers what this system was called, maybe I can find some NOS/used cables on ebay.

Heres a pic of what I have.

Re: Morse steering ?

Why don't you contact Morse-Teleflex directly. These are probably the most helpful and cost conscious people I have ever dealt with. The number helps, but they can ask you questions that will aid in a successful identification.

Usually the numbers are in white, on a black sheathed cable within 1-2 feet of the helm end.

Re: Morse steering ?

I agree - contact Morse-Teleflex.

That said, I happened to stop by my local OMC dealer today for something and asked about steering systems because I had a question about dual cable systems too. There are two different kinds and I suspect yours is the kind that is set up so that the cables operate in opposite directions. The type that have two cables running along side of one another, on the same side of the boat, operate in tandem.

Hopefully, you will be able to just replace the cables for your current system but you will still be able to use the same setup, even if you do need to buy a completely new system.

Re: Morse steering ?

Are you sure it is a Morse system? I don't see anything like it in my Morse catalog. Of course it is a 1998 catalog, that might have something to do with it.

Yes, it's a Morse system. The only thing it says on it is - Morse Controls... Hudson Ohio USA ... The boat and motor are 1983 so I would believe it's the same age.
btw. It still works fine but the cables are so rotted outside of the transom there is no more covering on them, someone wrapped them with black tape.

I would rather not have empty holes in the transom. And i would asume there is a reason thay put a duel cable system on it to start with, maybe because it's a realy big/ heavy motor ( 83 Mercury blackmax 300, 3.4 L)
Just wondering =Would a standard single cable system work on this monster? Will I have to change all the brackets on the motor ?

Thanks Jeff/ proples

Re: Morse steering ?

A dual cable system is needed (may be required) for engines over 150 HP.

I do not think a dual cable/single side system would be a problem as far as bracketry goes.

The Morse/Teleflex folks are real helpful, as mentioned.
