Most Stressful Job In The World? Driving Instructor?

I do a lot of driving at my job, typically over 150 miles a day, so I get to see some crazy stuff. So today, I'm walking in a neighborhood, marking out the gas main, and some car comes flying by, swerving, squealing tires, just completely erratic driving. As they come closer, I see the sign on the side that says it all: "Student Driver." They passed me, and at the stop sign the elderly gentleman in the passenger seat gets out and takes over for some girl that looked all of 13 years old. Wonder if she passed?

This story brought back fond memories of Driver's Ed in high school, that I still laugh about to this day. My best friend was in my class with me, and one day the instructor took three of us out to do our final exams. My friend drives first, does a great job (as we had been driving the back roads since we were 13, and I taught him in the first place). I drive next, do a great job. Then the girl who came with us was the final driver. Here we are, driving 20 in a 45, car half on and half off the road, swerving, hitting every pothole, clipping a mailbox, etc. Our instructor is frustrated, as he simply cannot get through to this girl, while my friend and I are in the back seat gripping the "Oh-Sh*t" handles for dear life. He finally tells her to pull into a gas station, that he will drive the rest of the way back to school. She comes flying in doing about 30, headed straight for the pumps! By this time, my friend and I have both back doors open ready to bail out, and the instructor hits the drover brake. We came within three feet of hitting the gas pumps. After that, I refuse to ride in a car with a woman driving (sorry ladies, but she ruined it for everyone).

The point of my story is, I think that a driving instructor would have to be the most stressful job ever, putting your life in jeopardy every day. What job do you guys think is the most stressful?

1979 I had driver's ed in a Ford Fairmont in Queens,NY. Girl I had class with froze in an intersection and we were t-boned in my side rear door by a fullsize school bus going about 40mph. Instructor broke ribs and pelvis. I slammed into the girl next to me and broke her arm and shoulder. I had no breaks but bruised from shoulder to foot. We bounced into a gas station up against the pumps. No fuel leaked and the crowd helped drag us away from the wreck for fear of explosion. We were lucky the roads were wet so we didn't absorb the full impact. I have despised the thought of driver's ed since...

Stressful, yes, but most stressful? Nah. That goes to NICU Nurses.

Kids should be taught their driving skills first in a pick up truck with a straight 6 and a 3 on the tree, then into a 5 ton diesel with a ten speed fuller with square cut gears at rush hour, hopefully that would deal with their bs driving attitudes:mad:

They used to be taught using that exact method. The first one grew up to design the automatic transmission and start a grassroots 'Buy Local' campaign. ;)

No offense to anyone else, but if you haven't done it, you can't imagine it, but hands down, 100% positive:

Insurance Claims Adjuster.

Name another job where you deal with only people that have just had a traumatic event in their life, are mad at you, call you a liar and a cheat before you even meet them, and then after they get done yelling at you, their auto body shop does the same, their healthcare provider does the same, and then your boss yells at you when you get back to the office for taking too long, paying out too much, not paying out soon enough... It never ends! All the while you can't call them one single name or do anything unprofessional.
Cops are close, but they can lie to suspects, tell people to shut up, carry guns, and can shoot the really stupid people! Insurance adjusters just aren't allowed that kind of freedom. :)

I was an on-the-road trainer, training my first new CDL driver, REAL truck driving for six weeks.

One trainee was enough for me.

Never again.

I agree 110%, maybe I should have re-phrased that to second-most stressful, right after military service. I wish them nothing but the best, and they will always have my utmost respect. When I was in the Navy I didn't have to go over there.

When I took driver training I had already had my license for a while, as did the girl I was taking it with. I didn't know how to drive a manual at all and she regularly drove a manual. This ended up working in my favor as the driving instructer apparently did not feel she drove it the right way and had lots of fun corrected what he felt were her bad habits.

I still remember this "Why did you stall?" "I let the clutch out too fast." "Why did you do that?" "Uhhhhh"

Back in the day my Driver's Ed instructor had it made ... being country folk most of the kids had been driving for years before license time. But he would always joke that when he asked the students what they wanted to practice the girls always asked to practice parking!;):p:D

I'm biased I guess but how about auto mechanic? In today's crazy world if you don't have your car your really stressed. Oh sorry the part did not come in, your car is not going to be ready today:eek: And screaming at me won't get your car fixed any faster:rolleyes:

Well, for some mechanics I can agree. But, try taking a fleet vehicle in for scheduled maintenance. I take an '08 Tacoma in for oil change, air filter change, and tire rotation ONLY, and it takes them four hours?! The only reason I don't do it myself is because they have some fleet maintenance program, so no money out of pocket, so I go with that. The cheapest oil change that I (well, my company) has gotten cost about $200 on my truck. The mechanic will say, "Oh, you need this, I changed this, you should get this." I have been charged for windshield wiper blades each of the last four times, yet they were never replaced. I called them out on it, and they took the charges off. Now I check them every time before I leave.

I cut my teeth on a 1940 Mack with a 220 and a tri-plex transmixer. (5 x 3, no synchros) Hung the center shaft in heavy traffic on my first time out. Had to come to a complete stop to get back into gear.

I haven't seen anything in 45 years that is driveable that I couldn't drive.:D:D
