Motor 4K RPM full throttle.

I recently bought a pontoon with a 2005 40 hp merc Bigfoot .

tac appears to be working but RPMs top out at 4,000. Tac may be bad ,, saw that it stuck at 1,000 when off. Max is 6k

Seems like a long way off prop pitch for what appears to be the original motor. So I’m assuming prop pitch.

Do you pitch pontoons like any other boat? Only being a older 2 tube 18 ft don’t expect it to get on plane especially with this motor.

other option would me to pull it out of the water to see if the eng is just **** for power but it sound is ok. No trailer yet.

Most of the 40hp 'toons I'v set up will end up with something in the range of 8-10"of pitch. With no more info than what you've given, you could check to see what you have on it now and compare it to that.

Anything further is going to require a working tach.

If your tach goes to 0 with power on, then it's probably OK. It still could be in wrong setting. Check manufacturers website for proper setting on back of tach for your engine..
