Ok so im in the market for a motor for my boat. I have a guy who has a merc 1100 ss not sure what yr & he's asking $400. He says it need a new rotary button on the distributer to run & some green wires under the cowl show their age. Is it worth the trouble to fool with this motor or should i just keeping shopping? Thx

Re: motor advice

check on the prices of the parts that it needs. if it needs some new wires and your handy, that could be done on the cheep. thats what i did with the harness on mine. i got colored wire tabs, and re wired it ONE WIRE AT A TIME. their is no way i would cut out all the bad, then try to re wire it. pull them off one at a time and replace them. solder and shrink wrap them. dont use crimps. (i did the first time around, now i have to re do it). but you can easily do it in a day. i picked up a seloc manual, and im suprised how simple these motors really are.

Re: motor advice

That motor is from the 1960s. If you can work on it yourself, and the parts are still available, and it is in good shape (no salt water usage), it might be OK. I would like to pay about $200, instead, however.

There are a lot of OBs from the 80s and 90s that can be had for short $. You might find one of these.
