I have a 1989 85HP Force engine with tilt and trim. When I put the engine into reverse it flys up out of the water. I have read in the forums about reverse lock but I can't seem to tell if this is my problem or not. I have attached a picture of my motor. Any ideas of what I need to prevent this from happening...It's pretty difficult to pull off an island with the motor coming out of the water in reverse!

You don't have a reverse lock. It's in the hydrolic system.
If it's comming up in reverse. Then the tilt ram could be bad,The hyd motor could be bad.
Need to do a leak down test. You have a manual?J

Re: Motor comes out of water in reverse

I do have a manual. The tilt and trim does work but I do have a leak somewhere because I have to fill it up with oil sometimes. Is there a way I can rig it to stop coming up in reverse temporaily? It's on a houseboat and I won't be able to do the tests until I pull it out in December.

Could I safely put in a pin in one of the 4 holes to keep it locked in place? I don't think rope would hold it and plus it could get tangled up in the prop.

yes a pin ok but how can a loop of rope above the water line get tangled in the prop ?? you are only going in reverse not full; power ..1/2 in rope fine ..I had one outoard with a spring to hold it down in reverse.....

Re: Motor comes out of water in reverse

does it hold a trim angle? the pistons are not directional. If you hold trim but kick up in reverse then it is almost certainly your valve body. it could also be a leaky band fitting on the tilt piston but you didn't mention a large oil slick. so I assume not.

Re: Motor comes out of water in reverse

I really don't use tilt because it's on a houseboat. I can say if I leave the motor in the up trailering position the oil will leak out. I've tried pushing it back down in the water when in reverse but it has a lot of resistance. What size spring did you use and maybe I don't understand the rope thing. Where would I put the rope to hold the motor down? I never ever use the tilt until I put the boat on the trailer (about once every 6 months), the rest of the time it's just down.

shackle in one of the trim holes ..rope around to a shackle in a trim hole in the other side ...a little loose so the motor can steer......this is not brain surgery .....
