You probably can, but you might have to change some other stuff also. I have not researched it but I'm thinking mounting brackets, carburetor controls, shifter handle. among others. You might have to find 35hp Evinrude parts because the 30hp might be different (cylinder head is different for sure). So my answer is yes, but....

Thanks,. I like the aesthetics if the 1956 Evidence and the Johnson appears to have the same shape of cover and would look much better ( the Evidence is original to my boa but would like 5 more HP ) 😀

The covers hinged differently, the Johnsons opened with the back half flipping up and over the front half, then the front half was slid forward to complete the removal, leaving a faceplate with choke and mixture screws still attached. Evinrudes, the port side flipped up, the starboard side was fastened by two screws. Choke knob has to be removed first, but mixture needles were on the division line of cowl.
