Hi new to the forum. I have a 1976 Johnson 85 hp motor. I start it up fine. It runs fine in neutral, however when I go to put it in gear, it stalls immediately. Foward or reverse. This all started happening about 20 minutes into my last ride on the river. The boat was running perfectly and all of a sudden, boom, stalls in gear. My roomate is a mechanic and I have always worked on my own vehicles, but boats kind of confuse me. Together we can not figure it out, so any help is appreciated in advance.

Pull the prop and check for something(Rope,Fishin'line,Ect) wrapped aroung the shaft and causing the binding. Then drain the lower unit and inspect the oil. Should not have any water in the oil(Milky Looking) or metal shavings. Let us know..
