motor diedies when put in gear

i have a 1993 johnson 88 spl. on my 17 foot bass boat .the motor will not idel in gear it idels fine when neteral.i have to raise my idel speed way up to keep it running when i put it in gear. have looked at carbs and timing. any help will be appreciated.

A cheap timing light will show which cylinder isn't firing.
If you have spark on all cyl's try spraying mixed fuel into each carb throat to see if one is starving for fuel.
