A little more info on everything would help. But it sounds like the shift interupter switch is sticking, probably from a sticky or corroded lower cable or from lower cable being out of adjustment. Give us some more info on what you got and what all you have done to it and we'll see what needs to be done.

I pulled outdrive changed gimbal bearing changed all bellows and reinstalled everything. I did inline shift cable but did not replace it was in very good shape appeared to have ben replaced recently. How would I adjust shift cable I did remove the piece the cable runs through that seats in the holder on the motor.if it was not back in place would that affect it. Outdrive is a pre alpha motor 3.0

Yes that has to be set just right or it will kill engine and it will not shift properly.

Re: Motor dies in reverse

Just to give you my experience... I replaced my lower shift cable last season because I had to do a coupler. New bellows, u-joints, gimbal bearing, water pump, and new shift cable. I got everything but the shift cable from the same vendor. I may have went a little cheap on that one. Anyways at the beginning of this season it was sticking from sitting throughout the winter. I put a mallory cable in this time, its grey instead of black. The overall cable looks and feels much more durable and has more quality than the other. The one I installed last year looked worse than the original mercruiser cable I took out and it was 30yr old.

Just a thought
