I have a 1981 Johnson "colt" 2 hp. It starts pretty easy but when I try to give is gas it dies. And then is usually hard to restart. The carb was rebuilt a few years ago. My thought is that it is getting too much gas and is flooding out. Does that seem right? What would cause this?

I'd have a closer look at the carb. How old is the gas you are using? Did it ever sit for a several months with non-stabilized gas in the carb...if so things could have gotten "gummed-up" in there.

Since carbs are often the culprit of stalling problems, I'd start there and confirm they are clean before looking elsewhere.

Good luck!
