I have a late 70's to early 80's mariner 85hp. I have been out 5 or 6 times in the past few weeks. The motor wants to stall when I put it into gear when I'm in the water. I just hooked the hose up to it in the yard and after letting in warm up for a couple minutes in went into forward and reverse just fine. When I'm in the water I have to have the warm up lever up about 1/3 of the way or it stalls. Can anyone give me some advise? Maybe I need to adjust the idle?

It can depend on several things, first off its called back pressure a motor will not run the same on muffs like it dose on the water and it needs to be adjusted on the water. Do it may need to have the idle set up a bit. That can also be a sign the carb needs to be rebuilt. I would try setting the idle up first and run some sea foam through it.
