hey. ive read a few threads with similar issues most say to adjust the idle mixture and clean the carbs. i have a 1985 50hp force. the idle screw is in the top front of the carb correct? and also when my motor doesnt decide to die on me and i get to cruise it runs just fine but when i hook a tube to pull it seems as if the boat cant haul the tube it goes about 5 mph and the front of the boat sits really high in the air. once the person gets off the tube the boat goes just fine. is there a way i can adjust the max rpms to make it run a little faster. after about 5-10 mins of cruising with somone on the tube it eventualy evens out and glides across the water like its not hauling something but the first 5 mins it just drags.

That's an air screw.DON"T touch!!!One and 1/8th turn out then in till it coughs then out 1/2 turn. Then leave it alone.Do a compression/spark test.Just to make sure there is nothing wrong mechanically.
The idle is adjusted on the side of the motor.Get a diagram. The tower shaft has a screw and a locking nut. That's the idle .
RPMs in gear in the water 750-800.
Max RPM is thru the load and prop.1-2 people and cooler and you should be able to get 5300 rpm.
Have a tach? Too many people and a 50 won't pull.
It's not really designed for pulling. So lighten the load check the rpm's and see what happens.J
