I have a 1978 model boat with a mercruiser 898 drive (305 chevy motor with the pre alpha drive). The motor runs great and shifts great from forward to neutral. When I shift from reverse to neutral the motor dies. I can manage to keep it running if I shift real fast from reverse to neutral, but just a normal shift will cause the motor to die.

Re: Motor dies

Rig the ignition cutout on the shift linkage. That is the microswitch which is supposed to briefly interrupt the ignition while shifting to soften the shift action.
