Motor engage problems

A few days ago we went to take our boat out and after I got out of the no wake zone went to pick up speed and the engine would rev, but would not pick up speed. Played with it for a minute or two and picked up just a little bit of speed (just above idle speed). Decided to pull over and let the kids fish, while I took a look. I did not find anything. When I started it back up the engine would start up fine, but would not even go in idle. The engine would rev up, but would not engage. Fished a little more and then got a tow in.

Here is the strange part, got home and hooked up the water and the boat worked fine in forward/reverse and high or low speeds. I took the cover off the outdrive to make sure that it was engaging. It was moving smoothly. Any ideas for other places to look? What might be possible problems?

This is a project boat and I also had a hole in the water pump at the same time. So I was distracted by looking at that also. The plate in the back of the pump rusted through and have replaced that.

86 Bayliner Capri IO with a Chevy 350. Volvo Penta 270 outdrive.

Thanks

Re: Motor engage problems

Any ideas on how to tell if it is bad?

How hard is this to replace?

I appreciate all of the help.

mine when you had a ruuber smell on water and a rubber sqeak when you cranked engine. mine was shot and when engine turned input shaft would not turn. my spline, spun on others hub could spin. Not a good way but when in gear i could turn prop both ways it is suppose to lock with engine one way and ratchet in other.

Re: Motor engage problems

Well last night I put the boat in gear and it will only rotate one way. Does that truely show it is not the coupler? Thanks
