Motor flushing

My 200 HP Evinrude has a hose fitting/pee hole for flushing the engine. I've been told I can flush the engine by removing that fitting, attaching the garden house directly without running the engine. Would I be better off using headphones on the water intake ports with the engine running?

Octo, if you do salt water, yes, use the "ears" to flush the engine.
