I have a 2001 great white 80 pound thrust trolling motor that just stopped working. I was trolling along and went in reverse hard for a while and then it died. It seemed to be warm at the head (where the circuit board, switch and relays are.) Upon taking it apart and start to diganose the problem, the switch has 25v, the potentimeter has 25v and the motor brushes near the foot (where the coil, magnets and brushes are) has 25v. I am assuming I have burnt up the armature/rotor, is there someway I can tell? And if it is the rotor, what do they cost to repair or replace?

Thanks,

Tim

Re: motor guide trolling motor

Armature consist of strips of conductive metal usually chrome or gold plated in direct contact with the brushes. The probability your armature is burnt is highly unlikely. Under heavy current due to severe load such as a hard reverse, the armature strips melt together creating a short loop across the winding; one solid piece of wire. Case number two maybe your winding is burnt; an incomplete circuit.

Re: motor guide trolling motor

The motorguide repair facility near my house charges a flat $50 for labor plus the price of the parts to fix the problem. It may be worth having an authorized repair facility fix it.
