What do I need to do first? I know I need to clean the carbs, replace the impeller, and lubricate everything. What is the eaisest way to clean the carbs? What else to I need to do? How should I run ratio of the gas? I own a 1972 Mercury 85 hp "thuderbolt"

Thanks,
Chris
cfinkbe@aol.com

Take the carbs off and dissasemble and clean or soak with laquer thinner or splurge for a bucket of carb cleaner at the local auto parts store. You should have a manual for the engine before you do this so that you can properly adjust the carbs when you put things back together. In addition you should also buy a fuel pump diaphram kit too and make sure all the little fuel ines under the hood are clean not cracking. A new fuel bulb/line would be a good idea too and examine the gas tank closely. Put an inline filter in the fuel bulb/line also. Check the spark plugs and squirt a little TCW-III into the plug holes and turn engine by hand with the plugs out or use the starter....Soon as the engine is running start a decarb job, I mean SOON as it starts to run. This willl prevent any stuck rings from damaging the bores. 25:1 premix for the first gallon or two of gas would be agood idea...Change the oil in the lower unit and check after the first hour of use to make sure the lower unit seals have not gotten hard and gone bad and started to leak water. Grease all the pivot joints on the engine mount.
