Motor height twin engines question

I have read many posts about motor height for single motors but what about twins? With a very deep V hull like mine, how do you approach this? Do you go by hull to center of anti cavitation plate? Since the inside of the anti cavitation plate in above the bottom of the hull and the outside is below the bottom of the hull.

What is the proper set-up and measuring points?

Mac

Re: Motor height twin engines question

As with a single your final X dimension will depend greatly on your props (style & technology) and how they react with your hull design, balance and spacing.

With multi engine set ups we generally just measure from the center of the lower unit to the bottom of the hull directly in front of it. Here's where it gets tricky. If possible we like to center each motor in back of a lifting strake. Now, most folks just measure across the top of the transome and find center. Then just place the outboards a given distance from the "center".

At least one motor may end up off center of the strake. Most times the port motor. This is not so critical that the boat cannot be used obviously but it may create strange overheating issues as you test different heights.

And with multipule engines you have the advantage of playing with toe-in or toe-out. As well as which side gets the backwards gearcase.

Re: Motor height twin engines question

Sounds like this is set up right. I am running just a tad above if you measure from center. The motors are turning out ward or port motor is the counter rotating motor. I have heard that swapping gear cases will give me more top end but I'd loose maneuverability when docking or shift steering. They are set pretty close together. Not a lot of room back there.

Toe in toe out? Like aligning the front end on a car? I have some slop or play between the motors. What does toe do for these motors?

Oh I didn’t mention the rig, Mako 261 twin 200 hp Johnson.

Mac
