ok Boaters,
I have a '83 Bayliner Capri w/a volvo penta aq125a/270. Not sure what (YR),(lit),Mod#,Ser# is of the motor. I've looked ALL over that ...... engine and can not find the (ID) plate. The only thing that i have found is a tag that reads (7679015346 aq125a) its on the RT side next to the starter and a stamp on the LT side on the block (830517). Im new to all this, and this is my real 1st boat. I've been reading this forum for the past 2 weeks and taking notes. When i picked up the boat all seemed fine, motor was running/working. I did find out that the boat had been in dry dock for 3yrs and sat under my carport for a yr. I broke it out about a 2weeks ago and other than it over heating ( after running it for about 15,20 min ) and a bad ignition relay she sounds ( GOOD ). I ran it in the driveway w/the muffs on. Yes i did find out that the impeller ( dose ) need replaceing, it was in peices. It being an older motor and stored for so long i want to replace the plugs/plug wires,oil/oil filter, air filter, thermostat, ignition relay, and the tilt/trim ( that may have something to do w/the relay and change out the flueds in the o/b. Still dont understand the intermittent reverse but i'll look into it and try what Mr.Don said to do. I am mechanicly inclined and can do most of the work myself, just need to get the rite info of the motor so i can get the parts i need, (genuine or generic ). I live in the mtn of WNC and we dont have anyone ( near by ) that can work on it let alone help me out. Any help and addvice will b (Grately Appreciated).:)
TY

The model number, AQ125A engine and 270 outdrive, should be all you need to order parts.

since you've got it running, I would hold off on buying all the tune up parts until you've had time to go through the rest of the drivetrain.

I would do a compression test on the motor to try to determine its general condition.

You'll want to try to find and remove the broken impeller pieces so they don't cause further issues down the line.

I would drain the lower unit and pull the upper gear box off to examine the ujoints and drive shaft bearings. I'm sure you'll need a new ujoint bellows regardless. There are instructions in the adults only section, under Volvo info. here:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=309095

I would do all these things before running the motor again. Let us know if you need any help.

Let us know what you find.:)

Just a couple things:

When you run it on muffs, plug the ~1/2" hole in the bottom or the drive.
There is no air filter, it is a spark arrestor. Just clean it with carb cleaner and blow it out with air from the inside.
Ignition tune up parts, and timing sets, can be found very inexpensive from automotive suppliers. I got mine from rockauto.com looking up a 1981 volvo 242 with the same 2.1L sohc engine.
The ignition relay is a standard 40Amp 12Volt SPST relay. You can even get them at radioshack.
Add in a fuel filter/water seperator. Sierra makes a nice kit, 18-7852-2.
I found this site with the entire sierra catalog to be helpful: http://www.marineparts.com/sierra2010/searchmain.html

good luck!

So the motor doesn't start with the throttle lever in the neutral position and you have some strange intermittent reverse problem?
I'd wager a guess that your throttle lever is not properly set in the neutral position. That could solve both problems.

Have you hot wired the motor to get it started? With the lever in the N position, was the prop engaged and spinning? If so then it is definitely in the wrong position.

You can push the throttle all the way forward and turn the key to try and start the motor. Then slide the lever slightly back and turn the key, and again and again. If the motor starts up at some point then THAT is the Neutral position and you can simply remove the cover plate, set screw, and slide off the lever. Replace it in the straight up N position and re-install the screw and cover. Recheck to see it start in the N position.
