motor identification?

I have a 1999 four winns 170 Horizon I just purchased recently. I am trying to buy a service manual for my boat. My volvo book says that the motor identification should be on the valve cover, it appears my valve cover has been changed/painted so there are no markings on it. I wrote down the numbers on the block and called volvo penta and they could not tell me anything with the numbers I gave them. It is possible one of the numbers is in correct (its hard to see everything the way the motor is jammed in the boat).

Anybody know what manual I should have? Its the 3.0 liter 181 cubic inch motor. I have been doing extensive work (new manifold, water pump, T stat, etc...) and its been a real pain without a manual. I am getting ready to rebuild the carb now and want the manual for fine tunning instructions. I wrote down the carb numbers called holley and got the OEM holley rebuild kit.

Also are any of these manuals available online for download?
Thanks

Re: motor identification?

Not a direct answer to your question, but clues for ya....

This website has much valuable Volvo information. Start here:
http://www.marinemechanic.com/Workhorse/index.htm

Then click "motor" on the left. Then scroll down to "The Volvo Reference Guide." Lots of documents there...many direct from Volvo.

Also, I own several 1999 Volvo Service manuals for my 5.0GL (one of each...not for sale...sorry), that happen to also fully cover the 3.0 GS motor. I do NOT know if these are the exact manuals you would need for your particular model, since I don't know your particular model:

My WT Engine manual is volvo part #3850076
My WT Electric/engine/fuel system manual is part #3850077
My SX-M outdrive/transom shield manual is part #7743008

I do not know if these are the latest/most accurate versions of these manuals. I do not know if they apply to your particular motor. But may be a clue...and I believe that any Volvo manual for you would be better than NO Volvo manual....

Others here know more about Volvo ID than I do...hopefully they'll chime in and can tell you alternate ways to get an accurate idea of what model you actually own, maybe from casting #'s or something...

My manuals indeed say the motor ID for your 3.0 should be on a tag on the valve cover. So if yours has been changed, maybe the motor is a completly diferent year/model than what it had originally?? I dunno.

Re: motor identification?

I have the manuals for download, all we have to do is figure out which year engine you have. Boat years start on Jan 1st of each year, but engines change models about mid year or after. So your 99 boat my have a 98 or even a 00 engine.
In the picture below, item #7 shows where the serial number tag is located. If you can't get your head in there to read the number, think digital camera.
