1977 70 HP Johnson
I got my boat out of the shop about a month ago. It was in for a complete LU reseal. I've ran the boat several times with no problems.
When I started the motor today, it went to full speed immediately. I shut it down, waited a second, then tried it again. Same thing. I had been doing some work on the motor controller, so I tinkered with it, determined everything was correct, then tried again... same result. I noticed that there was a linkage lever that was flipped over to the right (forward in respect to the boat). (pictures to follow) I flipped it counter-clockwise and the motor will no longer start. So, I manually held the lever in the halfway position. The motor would start and run (fairly) normal. I noticed there was a spring on the aft linage that looked like it wasn't connected to anything. I couldn't figure out where it went, but I'm wondering if it isn't the culprit.
My questions are: what is that lever and why would that lever be all the way forward in the first place if it just allows the carbs to be full open? Does that spring have anything to do with keeping it in place?
Lastly, after trying to start the motor 7 or 8 times, I finally gave up and pulled the boat out of the water. Much to my complete and utter disgust, there was/is a milky substance coming out of the LU weep hole on the SB side. I'm no boat mechanic, but that looks an awful lot like water mixed with oil. Should I worry about that since the motor had run at full rpm several times, even though it never ran for more than a couple of seconds each time?
Thanks in advance for your help!
