Well some likes them loud, and makes modifications to make it louder....
Are this engine new ?? as in new for you ??, has it alway been loud ?

Don't know about any outboards with sound muffler ( no need as the exhausts exits under water )....

BUT...
Any damage on the engines leg ??, as in extra drilled holes ??
Any exhaust leaks from the powerhead ( port side ) ??

Re: Motor is LOUD as HELL!

I bought a 1993 40hp Mariner a few years ago and after running it for the first time I found it very loud also. Assumed it must be "normal". Ran it for several weeks like that.

Later in the season I pulled the LU to replace the impeller and found that the exhaust tube was missing:eek:. The dealer wanted two arms and a leg for a new one but after much searching I managed to find a good used one for $40. After I installed the exhaust tube it was a different motor. I was surprised that it ran as well as it did without the tube in place.

Welp, definately has a tube cuz I just replaced impeller and pump housing a few weeks back but maybe it did not seat correctly. Spose I could take the lower unit off again :( and take a look
