Finally I think i've found a motor for my 24' pontoon. Earlier last fall I thought i'd save money and so I found a 1969 100hp Evinrude with power tilt/trim for $200. Well i'm done trying to "save money" with boat motors because i've found you only get what you pay for. It's an electric shift motor and we finally put it on the stand and tested it and found out the wiring is all bad and nothing works right. So my mechanic looked at me and said "it's not even worth fixing." So now i'm going to just stick it out and buy something nice. I've found a 1995 Mariner 90 hp long shaft with power tilt/trim that runs great and looks great. They want $2200 for it. My question comes from the mechanics opinion on pontoons and horsepower. He said that anything above a 75 hp on a pontoon doesn't really matter. He said you could put a 150 hp on the same boat that you had a 75 hp motor on and you'd go the same speed. I understand pontoons aren't meant for speed, but I still don't see how a 75 hp vs. a 150 hp. would go the exact speed. He told me I really wont notice much difference between this 90 hp vs. the 55 hp. that was on it before. I thought i'd get everyone elses opinion because i've ridden on a 24' pontoon with a 90 and the other had a 75 and I thought I could tell a bit of difference. Love to hear your thoughts!

I'm sure that the "Bullbutter" was meant for your mechanic. 90 is a good size for a Pontoon. I've got an Evinrude 88 SPL on my 24 footer and it's got enough power to pull tubes and skiers. you'll notice the speed difference between a 55 and 90 or a 75 and 150.

I think he was referring to

"He said you could put a 150 hp on the same boat that you had a 75 hp motor on and you'd go the same speed."

I'd have to agree with Incoop on that one.

Yeah that's what I thought. I'm not sure i've ever heard a 24' pontoon pulling skiers before, so you might get my hopes up Kid. Really my only reason for buying a 90 hp on my pontoon is for when the storm comes, we can get the H E double hockey sticks out of there and back to the docks. Once I was on a pontoon with 5 people coming back from a bar and we looked out and saw storms coming and wind was picking up, god was I glad we had that 90 on the back to get use back home. Plus if I can pull a tube with it then i'll consider it a bonus. :)

LOL. Yes, bullbutter to your mechanic's silly statement, not your question. I can't understand how he could possibly think that. FWIW I used to watch my buddy slalom behind his parents' 24 footer with an 88 horse. That was a big motor for a barge back in 1980 something. It was really funny, sort of like watching a big passenger jet take off. Just doesn't look like it should work, but it does. Enjoy your ninety.

A 90 will be great. Tubing will be no problem and skiing will be possible. Put it on the boat and have fun.

Re: Motor Issue

I only have a 60 and tube with 3 on board and 1 on the tube. Not fast, but the kids have fun. Think I was going about 13 mph.

Re: Motor Issue

I think the mechanics statement is an exageration of the fact that as the speed increases you get diminishing returns
as you add horsepower.
I feel your better off with the bigger motor because when you run the 90 at the speed of say a 60 the 90 is loafing
instead of churning its guts out as the 60 would be.Do keep in mind a 90 will use" about"9 gph at wot.
Its also possible the 90 gear case is bigger than the 60 giving better control and improved prop performance.

I've pulled a tube with 4 adults, and 5 teenagers on the boat. Some times just one of them was in the tube, other times a couple were.
