1965 Johnson 9.5 hp jumps out of forward into neutral. Will stay in reverse. Would this be a linkage adjustment or drive dog issue?

Most likely clutch dog/forward gear. Check linkage first - make sure no play, and see if prop spins freely when shift lever is in neutral and engages when in forward and reverse.

Try it in reverse. If it jumos out in reverse and in foreward, you should have a linkage problem. If just in foreward probably a clutch dog.

Re: Motor jumps out of gear

I'm thinking worn clutch dog too. Does it feel like it's slipping out of gear with a "bang" like you hit a stump underwater? If so that's also a common sign of a worn clutch dog. Some folks replace the dog out right, but you can get away with flipping it around, in which case you should stay in FWD ok, but may slip out of REV. That's a trade off some folks are willing to make because they may not use REV that much, or because they see how much a new dog can cost, which is usually more than you'd like it to be (new one for my '61 10 hp was $65-$70 .....gulp!) :/ You may be able to get one off of a donor low end for a bit less. Once you've ruled out the shift rod linkages, you'll have to check on the clutch dog by opening up the gear case. It's not that bad really. Just go slow and take pics if you aren't sure where all the bits go. Lots of threads here on how to replace a worn out clutch dog too.
