Lots of folks here running 40 and 50 year old johnnyrudes. That, however, has little to do with the expected longevity of new models. We don't know, yet, how long they'll last. Further, fixing today's outboards when they break is expensive, unlike the older models, where the complete ignition system could be replaced for about $100. These days, the point at which the cost of repairs becomes impractical comes sooner than with the older ones.
As with anything, proper regular maintenance will help keep your outboard running longer. How much longer? Well, time will tell.
