so i was on the lake the other day, and i reversed my motor, and apparently it was not secured properly and it lifted it self up out of the water and scared the crap out of my girlfriend.... how do i fix this problem so she will continue to go boating with me????

There was a screw on the side that i thought would secure it, but its either not the right screw or something is wrong with it.

the motor is a fat fifty '59 model

and just to make myself clear, it IS seccured properly to the transom, it just pivots up on the motor mount, the same way i would lift it to trailer the boat.

if your feeling lucky lock it down, I always left mine unlocked on my ski boat figured if I hit something would have a little give.

should have lever between the transom mount under the front. says lock and release. if you hit something, it will release, to avoid damage.

Agreed. Lock it down. If you hit something while it is locked down, it will make a loud banging sound that will scare the crap out of both of you. But it's just the release going off and is harmless.

well i use that release and lock thing when i trailer the boat, but it should also lock in the down position?

i always locked mine when running, unless in area i knew was trecherous. if you don't lock you can very easily lose control in reverse, as you learned.

I can't say for certain about that model, but those locks aren't intended for trailering - it can come down *hard* if it releases.

here is a picture of a motor like mine, i circled what holds up the motor while on the trailer, it is similar but not exact to mine, but that is how high it sits when locked in position.

PM, we are talking about different locks. You are talking about the trailering lockscrew, we are talking about the lockdown lever on the front/center which locks the motor down.

As for trailering, the lockscrew was a poor design liable to break. The trailering support in the preceeding picture was an aftermarket accessory (obsolete). Nowadays use a "transom saver" which supports the motor against the trailer. Available here at iboats and everywhere else.

EDIT: You DO have the tilt pin installed in one of the several adjustment holes...Don't you? That is what he lockdown latches onto.

PMDavis, The Fat-Fifty has a screw in bolt on the transom clamp that was intended to lock the motor in the tilted position while trailering.

The lock down was supposed to be used while running. I never used reverse on my fatty, so I never used the lock down mechanism.

so the one i circled should be up like that while in the water? it seems really high when its up like that in the water, to high to operate safely at high speeds, and im not sure it can go down much lower.

Re: motor lifting it self up in reverse

in the picture you have marked the rod the motor is fastened to is a U shaped piece they used when trailering the boat. it is allowed to drop completely down when operating the motor. there should be another pin in the holes that the motor will attach to, as in this picture,

005.jpg

this is the lock and release lever that locks the motor in the down postion on to the pin above.

heres a better picture.

so i should have two pins down there? one holding that thing the motor is resting on and another to latch on to the motor when it is all the way down?

Re: motor lifting it self up in reverse

No - ONE pin. The other lever/pin thing is a lock to hold the motor in the up position only. The pin that goes through both clamp brackets is the tilt adjustment pin - it also acts as the anchor onto which the lock-down lever hooks on to. The lock-down lever is the part that the springs in the back of the swivel tube are attached to. Those should move when you operate the lock/release lever in the front.

Re: motor lifting it self up in reverse

I haven't seen a trailering bracket exactly like the one marked (?). It did not come with the motor when it was new. Anyway it is for trailering your boat and has to get out of the way somehow before running the motor. Usually they just drop down out of the way.

THEN, the motor can drop down till the area marked (1) contacts and locks to the tilt pin.

So simple.
