I have an 89 Force 50hp on a 15 1/2 foot Maxum fiberglass boat. I know the engine is underpowered but all cylinders are strong and it takes a while to plain and only runs about 25mph tops. The moter stop bar is in the second hole from the transum and I was wondering if changing this location would be better or not. I don't think tilting the motor out further would be good, but maybe in all the way might. Any input would be appreciated.

Re: motor lock down running position

I have a 1991 Force 70Hp on a 16ft fibre glass hull.My experience is that at full throttle The boat is almost airborne, Too much power it seems.
I was thinking a 50Hp would be more manageable on my Hull. Maybe the answer is in propellor pitch .I am running a prop with a 14 inch pitch I believe this to be fairly coarse. I have just acquired another prop of 13 inch pitch (through iboats yahoooo!). My friend says for waterskiing a coarse pitch gets the hull up on the plane quickly. The person I got the 13" from said it was better for trolling. I am still learning but ZaxxonII could your problem be a fine pitch as your top speed is only slightly less than mine.

Could be Craig, but I don't have a tach to determine which prop to use. This is the original one that came with the motor when it was new according to the previous owner. Do you have tilt trim? If not, where is your motor positioned on the transome?

Re: motor lock down running position

I have the standard hydraulic tilt lifter. The transom is vertical, and the motor is completely at the end of its travel while motoring
(fully down).I have no motor stop bar in use, it has been removed, so the motor is vertical. I think my boat still has a slightly bow-high ride. Maybe needs some external trim tabs, as well.
Tilting your motor more ,will raise the bow more.
