Motor lock down

I have an 89 Force 40hp. Contrary to all the negative comments it's been a pretty good motor for the money and lack of horses. I need to know if the rod that locks the motor down (so it doesn't pop up in reverse) can be replaced and where I might get the part. I have jury-rigged it with a stiff wire and that works I think. I haven't had it on the water since rigging it. To be safe I want to put the right part in if possible. Any advice?

Re: Motor lock down

Try a Merc dealer. It sounds like you mean the rod that is used to manually adjust the trim (think the lock hooks to the rod to hold the motor down when in the locked position) -- if so, you might be able to find a used one (even from another make or model, if it's the same size).

I would imagine if you are handy, you could fashion a bolt that would work if you can't find one. All you need is stock metal and something to hold it in the holes. Even a self locking nut on the end. Been there, as I dropped mine in the water while adjusting trim. I found one at a local boat junk yard. There are alot of those motors in the scrap heap and many style pins will work. If I come across one, I will let you know..

I just replaced my lockout this summer, it's the rod item 32 that you need to follow for all the attachments for the 'lever' that is in the front of the motor, front meaning inside the boat. The lever is connected to a plastic 'cam' that moves the rod to lock the motor for reverse.
