I purchased my 15 foot fishing boat with no motor, its rated for a 25HP. I am using a old 10 Johnson but wanting to up grade. Is their a right way to fit the motor to the boat? Short shaft or long does it matter how far the prop is in the water?

Yes it does, if you put a long on a short boat you won't get the perfomance you should same with putting a short on a long.

I would say if it is a regular tinny it is a short shaft but to be sure measure your transom from top to bottom, normally long shafts are 25'' a short would be 6''or so less than that.

Not quite, 5150. Short shafts are 15", long 20" and extra long 25".

When measuring the transom be sure to measure vertically if the transom is angled.

If it is rated for 25HP it is very likely a short transom.
