boat started fine at ramp ran out 3 miles and fished for 3 hrs and then batteries were to weak to start motor. had to call sea tow today for a jump and it ran back to ramp @ 5000rpms for aprox. 10 min. and then would'nt restart at ramp .at home tried volt meter on battery ports with engine off and read 12.01. with engine running at 4000 rpms on the hose in nuetral same results. advise: 1993 evinrude 200 hp oceanpro and 2 decka marine 1000cca batteries bought new 6 mos. ago. any help apreciated

Re: motor not charging batteries

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the voltage regulator. When the batteries get low it's best to charge them with a battery charger as the stator is just for maintaining the battery with normal draw. Don't overcharge the batteries on a shore charger either, follow the charger directions based on the battery's amp hour rating and check the fluid before and after charging them. I believe one at a time is best and had been removing all cables while charging. Now that I've got a new regulator rectifier in the battery charges just fine.

BTW- better to not go over 2000ish on the hose.

what is the proper way of testing for regulator rectifier?

got a newer water pump and great preasure on my hose 18 psi . it was only long enough to take reading. thanks though

You can bench test the simple non reglated rectiers with just a mulimeter but you need more kit to test the regulated one.

Best you can do is check that you have AC volts going in between the yellow wires from the stator coil. The volts will vary with rpm but will quickly rise well above 12 up into the 20s.

Check the DC volts between the red wire and ground. Should start off at battery volts .. 12 point something depending on state of charge. Fall while cranking but quickly recover and then rise to around 14 or a little more as the battery recharges.

If you get a good reading for the AC volts between the yellows but the DC on the red does not rise above the battery volts then pretty likely the rectifier is dead.

BUT just to see the pitfalls and the mess you can get into read this currently on going saga http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=411196

Completely baffled by all that now.

okay had 1 loose magnet on flywheel, stator was good, ended up being voltage regulator which was new in 06. thank god for parts motor i picked up. reading around 13 volts at idle and 14 volts at 2000 rpms at battery terminal. sound right?
