Just replaced my engine last season its time for an oil change before new season,Mercruiser 260/5.7 indmar engine. w/alpha 1
my engine calls for a 15/40 marine oil, but i can't find it anywhere easy, all i see in the shelfs is 15/40 for diesel engines.
my question is would it matter if i use any 15/40 oil marine or non marine, whats the difference? im in salt water by the way.

Bondos right, heck one of out service techs takes the used oil, wich comes out looking perfectly clean, saves it for his car. Some of them boats only get less than 30 hours on em a season. By the way,his car is fine.

That's my oil of choice. Years ago when I had a petrol car to tow the boat I used the same oil in car and boat, just 'off-the-shelf' from the local supermarket. I then switched to a diesel tow vehicle (6.5l turbo) and did a pile of research on which oil I could use in both engines. Ended up with the options being 1) Use petrol engine oil in a diesel engine (the Landcruiser) or 2) Diesel engine oil in the petrol engine (the boat). The diesel engine oil has far better characteristics for use in a boat engine then any petrol engine oil has, so I use diesel engine oil in both engines. Have used it in this engine (2006 4.3MPI) since new, and in the previous engine (1994 4.3LX, now in a friends' boat) also since new. The LX has over 2000 hours and still running strong, and the MPI has 350 hours and still purring like a kitten. :)

If you look at the label, most 15w/40 oils are rated for both diesel and gas use. This includes Rotella, Chevron Delo and Pennzoil Marine.

As Bonda has said, It's the additives that make oil brands different from each other. Diesel rated oil has different SAE ratings on it specifically for diesels. All that means is it's blended for the specific environment inside a diesel motor. As Blonda has said, Doesn't matter if you use it in a gas engine. What matters is regular oil and filter changes. If you like the convenience of synthetic where you only have to change it once every leap year you still need to at least check over the machine once in awhile and that is the whole idea, to get a set of eyes and hands on a potential problem before it happens.
