Hi,

I've got a 1981 Hewescraft 12' boat with a 15hp Johnson on back. The transom is pretty thick, but a 'friend' told me to remove my motor when trailoring the boat because the transom on 12 ft boats is too weak to handle constant abuse of motor on back when trailoring.

I trailor my motor locked straight down to reduce the lever effect on the transom.

Even with a transom saver, there must still be a little stress on the transom.

therefore, motor on or motor off? that is the question!

Hewescraft has always made a pretty stout boat. I doubt you would need to take a 15 HP motor off to tow it.

Back where I am from we all have john boats. I had a yamaha enduro 9.9 in mine and never took it off. Some of the other guys had larger motors and never took it off. The pressure your motor places on the transom while you are in the water is way larger than the pressure while trailering.

Concure, leave it on, the force on the transom at WOT is many many times anything you would ever find driving down the road.

Nicely ask your friend to "Go to his happy place" as opposed to offering advice, transoms did just fine even before the invention of the transom saver....:D:D
