motor only pumps water in forward gear?

I have a merc 9.8 hp 1985 model I installed a water pump impellar,
and now it only pumps water while it is in forward gear has anyone ever
had this problem?

You have a vacume side leak and the pump is sucking exhaust instead of water probably the intake pipe to the pump was disturbed and not resealed.

thank you for your post I reinstalled the rubber grommet around the tube how else do i seal, it maybe with silicone?

I use bellows adhesive but silicone should be fine.

You might try this also:

Clean out the 2 small holes in the rear right below the lower cowl cover. These are idle relief holes that over time plug up with residual exhaust trash and force too much exhaust into the intake water tube during idle. You can clean out with a small wire and spraying WD40. If you are cranking in a barrel and in neutral, this problem really shows up.
