Motor only reaches 3/4 speed and RPM's

I have a 3 liter, 4 cyl, 125hp 1999 Mercruiser. My motor will not react like it shoould, it dogs out when I put the hammer down. It will eventually reach 3/4 speed, what use to be 40 mph is now 30 mph. Same with RPM's. <br />Here is what I have tried already<br />1 tank of 93 octane, cleaned out fuel filter, changed spark plugs. I don't have a water fuel separator. <br />I will clean the spark arrestor, put in dry gas, and carb cleaner tonight. <br /><br />has anyone else ever seen this? What else should I try, beside a marina?

replace more ignition components, possibly a coil. disassemble/clean/rebuild carb, fuel cleaner not enough.

No I don't keep it in the water, I trailer it everywhere. I did just speak to someone who happen to over hear my conversation, they have a Mercruiser engine and had a similar problem, they said they fixed it by replacing the coil. I will try that tonight. If that doesn't work I will try the other electrical stuff.

SOLVED! Changed the spark plugs out on Sunday, Found out my incompetent "friend" forgot to put the last plug wire on the plug after changing it out. Thanks everyone!
