I want to purchase a new motor for my 16' lund with 15" transom. All the information on new motors show 20" length. Am I going to have trouble getting a motor? Looking for 40 to 50 horse, tiller, electric, t&t.

Re: Motor questions

20 " shaft is a standard length these days, you may have to order 15 inch shaft, or add a jackplate to the transom.

Re: Motor questions

I doubt that a 16' boat with a 15" transom is going to be rated for 40-50HP tiller outboards.

Start with: What is your boat rated for?

Re: Motor questions

Thanks guys (or gals). Boat is Lund 16' big fisherman, rated for 40 HP. Would like to put 50 on and brace the transom for it, if I can. Boat is used in the river and with pa and the indian in the boat with me, I need more power to run up river at times. Present 25 runs well with 2 but 3 is a load. Would 50 be overpowering? Would 40 serve me just as well?

Re: Motor questions

If it's rated for a 40, don't exceed it. There's more than just transom strength that goes into that rating. Plus you could be in trouble if you ever had an accident and you were overpowered. Your boat should perform great with it's max rated horespower.

Re: Motor questions

40 it is. I only want performance, not trouble. I want to thank those who have answered the thread. Good to know I can turn to those who will help when needed. Good fishing/boating. :)
