Motor quits while shifting...

I just recently rebuilt the carbs and replaced the plugs (the old plugs had a lot of oil although I'm not sure if they should have any) in my 1996 Johnson 130 in hopes of fixing a problem that is driving me insane... The motor starts fine and seems to idle somewhat OK (quits every one in awhile) but it will usually quit when I try to shift. Once I am able to shift without it quiting (it helps if I push the choke in as I am shifting), it will run just fine.

I thought that it may be the idle speed orifices but they were spotless when I looked at them. When I run the motor with the muffs, it seems to idle OK but you can hear a "pop" every few seconds with a good puff of smoke. I guess the mixture is getting too lean (too much oil) and that's why it pops and smokes?!?

I would appreciate any help!

Thanks,
Freddie

That 'pop' you describe Freddie may be an air leak? If you had the carbs off (and you did to rebuild) it is possible that air may be leaking at the gasket surface somewhere.
That would upset the low speed fuel/air balance. You state that it helps to push the choke in.
That would further indicate (to me anyway) an air leak. The extra fuel from choking momentarily balances out with the excess air and the engine keeps running until the imbalance returns, or you have run up the rpm so that you are no longer running on the low speed jets and have moved to the high speed jets.
I would also expect the leak to be a really small one, or you would experience stronger symptoms.
I'm not a mechanic by any stretch, but this may be some of the problem................piniongear

idling on muffs doesent put any back preasure on the exzoust and will let it idle higher . when in water the back preasure is when the idle needs to be set . it may be idled to low . had a 59 1973 that did that and had a exzoust leak .it ran fine with the hood off and W O T . but wouldnt idle long with hood on . plugged the hole where the eletric shift wires wer and that stopped the dying . papasage

Thanks for the info. I tried looking for where air may be coming into the fuel system and could not find any obvious spots.

I have taken it to the shop in hopes of them nailing the root of the problem. I'll let you guys know what they find.

Thanks,
Freddie
