First you need to find out from where the fuel is coming from Charlie. Take the hood off take a look see. Should be readily apparent.

When you trim the engine down does it just shut of or does it run a little and sputter out?

thanks for the input and your for your help in the past. the fuel line coming into the motor attaches to what i think is a fuel cutoff switch. it is clyindrical and has a red lever. fuel seems to be pooling on the fuel source side of that. i really have to get a parts manual, i know, but that is a bunch of days away when ordering on line. i was hoping to find an answer sooner. thanks again

charlie

That's not a fuel shut off switch. That red lever is part of the primer solenoid. It serves as a manual choke should the primer solenoid fail. The solenoid actuates when you push in on the key during cold starts. It allows extra fuel to the carbs for quicker starts.

ok..that is good to know. i just ordered a parts manual and appreciate you collectively walking me through this. so the fuel appears to be leaking ahead of that. should i not have to adjust that before starting? more fuel comes out when i put it to an "open" position. i guess this stands to reason. might it be a problen with the carbs then? how do i go about attacking that issue?

Charlie, it's common for the red lever to develope a crack which will allow fuel to spirt out of it when the solenoid is energized. Pump up the primer bulb and take a look around the red lever. Turn the lever about half a turn Counter clockwise. If fuel is coming from there, all you'll need to do is replace the lever. Real simple to do and instructions come with the new lever...if that's where the leak is.
