Hello everyone I am considering having my 1992 40hp Mercury 2 stroke rebuilt. I have been researching numerous rebuilders on line. My question is does anyone have any experience with these rebuilders??? I haven't been to the local shop yet, but thought perhaps someone who professionally rebuilds might be better. I was wondering if the price of rebuild would be better than repower?? I am open to all suggestions. Boat runs fine so NO immediate need to do anything. Any and all help will be appreciated.

Low compression the reason for rebuild. Compression on all 4 cyl is 70 psi. She runs and great starts everytime. Compression is correct. Any help appreciated. Thank you, Chuck

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you say it's running great, I think I would be tempted to leave it be.

Re: Motor rebuilder

If it makes you feel any better I will reply. I don't have any experience with re builders or much to do with 2 strokes in general, but here goes. I don't have any experience with the rebuilders so can't offer anything there. I would hope that the guy in the local shop is a professional so a dead heat there, as far as prices go I would think a re builder could give you a ballpark figure on cost of re build and you could then compare to the cost of re power. Mind you it would really depend on what machining or parts that need replacing for the engine builder to give you a price. I do know that new pistons etc can start to run the cost up. Cylinders could need sleeving or boring ... all adds up.
Cheers.
