Well, thanks to yall and a great friend I am semi running on my 5.5 1959 seahorse.

I need a thermostat, I can actually install all by myself! We (he) got the impellor in and "YES" the powerhead must be removed, yall were right again!

I really learned alot about the ole girl. Its not as big a mystery as I thought but still need to do a little more. I actually think she will run with just the thermostat.

It does need a carb rebuild I (we) think. Will just running it clean it out some. It leaked at first, maybe the float was stuck, but appears to have stoped. Any tips on rebuilding or things I should be aware could occur as a result of me doing this.

Is there anything else I should be conserned about. It sat up for ten years but I think its in decent shape.

The guy that gave it to me said to take it and pay him what it is worth. I have about 70 bucks and 15 hours in it right now but think it will be a decent engine. Could someone tell me what is a fair price to offer him. He is a nice man and would probably just give it to me. He said if it didnt work just use it as a boat anchor but I want to be fair to us both.

Thanks again.

Give him$100 buks, and you will both be happy.
It sure is refreshing to hear from someone considerate enough to give tought to "what's fair". Without knowing you, I figure you are a gentleman, sir.
As for the carb. remove it, an clean it as best you can without completely tearing it down. The "kit" for that carb may be very rare indeed. But if the needle stuck once, it can stick again, and this time, you have to have a trolling motor. To clean it,remove the float pin.The needle valve will fall-out when you turn the carb over. Just spray some carb cleaner into the cavity, and the needle valve, and re-assemble. Clean the gas tank spotless, and the fueline. Replace the fuel line if it is "aligatored" or very stiff. If it is stiffer than a new one,it means the gas has changed the hose in bad ways.
