Motor running poorly

I have an older 1985 35HP Mercury. I installed new control box and control cables. I thought and still think I have it close, but may still be off some, I am not sure, I do get reverse and forward they are tight but they are there.

I get WOT and full reverse, just the handle seems to stick sometimes. I am not sure if this has anything to do with my problem I am experiencing now though. When I say sticking, I mean I can put the handle to 3/4 throttle in forward easily then it sticks and I have to push it fairly hard to get it to go WOT but it does go and hit WOT. In reverse the same is also true, about 3/4 throttle then sticks but does go with some pushing.

NOW, the problem I experienced yesterday was when I was running WOT it would be running smoothly and then started kind of like hicupping, it would hesitate and then hit WOT then hesitate again, it was like every 3 seconds or so it would have a slight hesitation to it. Then after running for about 10 minutes doing that it would only stay at a little more than 3/4 throttle and would not go into WOT at all. While I was running at WOT and it was doing all the hesitation stuff, if I back off to 3/4 throttle it would run perfect with NO hesitations at all.

I felt like it might be a fuel problem. I have 2 - 6 gallons tanks. One has the standard hoses etc you buy in the box ready to go , the other has had all the connectors replaced with the brass fitting and clamps so it is just straight hose to the tank with the exception of the mercury fitting on the motor. I switched tanks to see if that made a difference and it did NOT make any difference at all. I squeezed the bulb and made NO difference.

Thought maybe I had an air leak but when I returned home I traced all the lines for cracks or whatever and I could find nothing to indicate it was getting air.

I am stumped on this thing.

One other note that was kind of weird, we were traveling along at just below plane level, and the motor would occasionally kick into to get us on plane without even touching the throttle handle, it would just pick up speed instantly. Anyone ever had a motor to that? If so, what causes that?

As I stated, if this is caused by the control cables not being adjusted properly, I will take them in can get them done but I am not sure it is but I am not an expert so any help would be appreciated. I just honestly do not know where to go from here.

One last thing. When we first started out it started and idled great, by the end of the day though it would start right up but not stay idling, and to get it to go forward you would have to start it and hit the throttle fast in order for you to go without it dieing on you.

Thanks guys in advance for all the help..
