motor runs for 5 min then it wont go over 3000rpm

i took the boat out to do alil fishin and the motor which is a 84 50hp ran great for 30 mins no problem then we hit some waves and the motor wouldnt go over 3000 rpm kind of weird. I took it back out a few days ago and i took it off the trailer and it got up to 5400rpm and ran great for about 5-10 mins then it wouldnt get over 3000rpm. If anyone has had this problem let me know or has any suggestions thanks!

forgot to mention i hooked it up to the muffs in the driveway and it ran fine when i throttled it around 4000rpms and let it run for 15 mins or so at idle then put throttle forward and so on.

Most likely you are dropping one or more cylinders, probably due to some loose crud int the carb bowls stirred up by the rough water. You can't tell by reving it up in neutral in the driveway. It'll sound fine even if its not firing on all cylinders. Rebuild the carbs if it turns out to be fuel.

Could the boat be over heating ? Is there water coming out the pee-hole . I found out the hard way , in the drive way with the muffs on ... it ran great '' water coming out the hole '' But on the lake no water that I could see , And my RPM's where dropping . Good luck . I'm still new to this out board thing , I normaly have V8 FORDS or Chevy's with I/O . But I do understand the 2 stroke thing ... cuz I have 4 Snowmobiles .

i dont know if it is overheating but it is gettin water through the pee hole when i put it in the water.

I took the boat out yesterday and we saw that the throttle pin had come loose and slipped back so it wasnt hittin its mark so we tightned it and it ran fine. Still think the fuel line is clogged or air is getting in the line.
