73 85hp evinrude... Just got the motor running today. New stator on her and seemed to run fine on land with the muffs hooked up. Warm water was peeing out a couple of different holes and blowing out of the two ports at the back of the motor near the top.

Took the boat on the lake for a test ride let her warm up good then gave it some juice went for about a minute or two in one direction at a nice speed slowed down turned around and started on my way back. Part way back it seemed as though just out of the blue while full throttle that I lost all power to the motor, and she just died. She would not crank over either. Took the top off the motor and found the motor to be very hot to the touch. Tried to crank it still nothing although you could see the starter engaging. After about 5 minutes finally she would turn over and start.

On my way again full throttle and the same thing happend. Waited about 5 minutes and the motor would turn over and start. As an experiment I countinued to run the boat around the lake at low speed without a problem. Even at 1/4 THROTTLE no problem but at high end seems like the motor is over heating and locking up.

If the impeller seems to be sucking in the water and peeing it out What could be wrong?

stuck thermostats, trash in the cooling ports! the pee stream just tells you that the impellor is pumping not that water is correcly circulating through the motor in all the cooling passages!

Glad I bought the manual online i'll have to look up the thermostats and stuff tomorrow. Hopefully I didn't damage the engine by overheating it to a hault twice

Re: Motor seems to overheat seize up and die!

You damaged it. No way you could do that without some damage. At the very LEAST, you burned up the head and exhaust gaskets. When you get the exhaust cover off to change the gaskets you can look in through the ports and see if you scored the pistons. Very durned lucky if you didn't.

You might as well do the gaskets before you run out and buy a water pump. Then you will know if it is worth a pump.

Would a compression test indicate scored or damaged pistions if this is the case. I was running 120 psi all around prior to this!

Pistons skirts can be melted and scored all to heck and back and still have compression as long as the rings are free.

So then what would the major effects or noticeable differences be?

This motor seems to still run absolutely fine when fired up however I will be removing the exhaust cover as you suggested in a little bit.

Do another compression test before you start taking parts off. Post the results.

All 4 pistons read juat over 120. Trying to remove lower end following instructions but I can't seem to locate this shift disconnect screw. maybe I'm just have a different vision as to what I'm suppose to be looking for. But the lower end will not drop.

Look on your starboard side behind and below the lower carb. It will be connected to the bellcrank. Or if you trace the shift rod up with your finger, into the engine area you may find it. I believe on yours the bellcrank is similar to a see saw or teeter totter, and the shift rod will be connected on one end. Getting it back together is the hard part. Before disconnecting, put a couple of the main bolts back in, you dont want it dropping on you when you get it unhooked.

thanks HighTrim that was actually really easy Once I knew what i was looking at. That online seloc manual is pretty good but sometimes the descriptions or illustrations are lacking for the Novice.

Do you happen to know where the thermostat is on these motors HT. They are not visable from the outside of the motor anywhere.

your thermos are located in a housing at the back lower portion of the block connected with 2 noses,3 bolts hold them in place, its easier if you loosen the cowling pan to give more room

Connected with two noses eh? I wonder if there will be room to stick mine in there.. lol Gottcha thanks I know exactly what you are talking about I was thinking of looking in there. I think it was you on another thread that was saying it's ok to have warm water comming from the pee hole What does it mean if its hot. Also how many pee holes are there suppose to be when I run my motor with the muffs on it seems as though it comes out in 3 different places through 3 different little holes. Plus I was getting sputter out of the two holes on the back of the motor just under the cowling, After my episode on the lake however I noticed today that I was not getting that sputter.
