Motor shaking

So when out boating, my alternator belt broke, I didn't notice right away that it broke so got it boosted and went a little further then motor started to slow down and back fired then died again.

So I went to put new belt on but broke the bolt that holds the tension on... So I went ahead and put belt on anyways and started it with the belt a bit slack. Once I started it the motor the motor, sterndrive and boat is shaking. Could the timing be off or something else?

Welcome aboard.

Need some more from you. What motor got palsy and did it overheat with no belt?

The battery and alternator supply power to the ignition. So as the battery went flat and the alternator was stilled, less voltage was available to make sparks. No, the broken belt has no affect on timing.

Oh ya sorry it's a 1994 omc cobra 5.0, fuel injected. And no I never noticed that the boat over heated.

Fuel injected with a dead battery - Yeah, it will shake.

Charge the battery and fix the busted bolt.

I charged the battery after the belt broke and put new belt on, but yes that bolt broke on the alternator so the belt was not fully tight when I started it up.

You have been pulling the drive annually for the required maintenance and servicing the motor per the factory manual, correct?
