Took my Mercury 90 HP motor in for a water pump service and now the motor slips out of reverse. The machanic said he had to reinstall the lower unit 5 times to get it to work at all, only worked for about three hours. Machanic stated that it may need a linkage adjustement.

How do you make a linkage adjustment for this motor, the cable seem to move the linkage as far as it will go?

Moving around the doc area without reverse isn't fun.

Please help.

you may need to adjust shift cable or may need a new mechanic, or maybe both.

but you do need a manual

The cable thingie (technical term) outta be about in the center of the slide rail when in neutral. Assuming that's the case all you can do is adjust the cable inward to favor the rear by a little more ; ie take up the slop in the arm to favor reverse a little more. Past that, your lower unit is just over-worn.

It's for sure you need a new mechanic, anyone that would let a unit out that way after a repair shoul find another line of work. If the engine does not have power tilt the reverse lock cam may be damaged causing a bind and not letting the engine to shift to reverse
